White oak is the traditional basketry material used in Appalachia. Weaving material is split out into strips which are used for a wide variety of styles of baskets. White oak weaving is in decline as fewer people are taking up the tradition. This is due in part to the difficulty of sourcing and processing the material. In this class you will learn everything you need to know to pick a tree, split it down, and thin the material to a finished size ready for weaving. Since the actual basket weaving is similar to other splint style baskets, we will focus on the processing side which is unique to white oak. Please note: This class will require somewhat strenuous physical activity and hand strength as the processing of the oak is physically demanding.
